Essential Oil Dilution Guideline
Essential oils are a wonderful addition to living a chemical-free lifestyle. The internet is full of misinformation and unsafe guidelines surrounding essential oil usage. The information below is a guideline for your personal use of essential oils. If you have any medical conditions, pregnant, young or old please seek out a professional aromatherapist to help you on your essential oil journey. One size does not fit all.
WHAT IS AROMATHERAPY?
Aromatherapy is a holistic art blending essential oils to promote health and wellness which is well researched and documented by health professionals (view PubMed). Essential oils are plant based extracts carefully distilled into liquid.
Tip: aromatherapy usage does NOT replace pharmaceutical drugs. Chat to your health practitioner.
WHAT DOES AN AROMATHERAPIST DO?
During a consultation, a qualified aromatherapist will assess the person holistically taking into account the medical history and devise a unique treatment plan which includes the use of therapeutic properties of essential oils.
A qualified aromatherapist will have spent 2 years plus obtaining a Diploma of Clinical Aromatherapy - HLT52315. Learning about anatomy, physiology, pathology and chemistry (along with effective and safe use of essential oils). Completing over 350 hours of work placement under supervision of other qualified aromatherapists.
Tip: always seek out Aromatherapists who are qualified and insured.
SAFELY USING YOUR ESSENTIAL OILS

What could go wrong with incorrect essential oil usage? Risk to damaging gut health, hepatoxicity and burning esophagus. Skin irritation or an allergic reaction. Incompatibility with homeopathic and pharmaceutical drug medication.
GETTING STARTED WITH ESSENTIAL OILS
Always read the label for instructions directions.
Start slow with essential oils and use low dilutions.
Patch test before using the essential oil.
1-2 drops of essential oil into the diffuser and build up to 4-6 drops of essential oil, if comfortable.
Follow the diffuser instructions on how to operate. 60 minutes is adequate and not to cause Olfactory Fatigue
GUIDE FOR DIFFUSING AROUND CHILDREN
Children below 6 months: 1 drop in the diffuser (in a different room).
Children up to the age of 6 years: 1 drop in the diffuser.
Children between ages 7 - 12 years: 2 drops in the diffuser.
Mixing (diluting) essential oils with a carrier oil (like coconut oil) is sensible to avoid skin irritation. Plus so many amazing qualities of coconut oil for your skin on its own !!!
Blending for normal adult body: 2-3 drops to 5ml of carrier oil.
Blending for normal adult face: 1 drop to 5ml of carrier oil.
GUIDE FOR TOPICAL USE ON CHILDREN
Always dilute essential oils with children. Please do not use essential oils on premature babies as their delicate skin is permeable.
3 months to 24 months: 1 drop to 20ml
2 years to 6 years: 1 drop to 5ml
6 years to 15 years: 1-2 drops to 5ml
15 years plus: 2-3 drops to 5ml
